Egan House, Jamaica Plain, Ma. 2009-2010
In January of 2007, Connie Egan’s house burnt down. As she was nearing retirement and had minimal insurance funds to rebuild, we decided on a smaller two family with low energy demands. In the process of researching energy rebates and designing photovoltaics into the roof, we became a supporter of green building certification: the public support of intelligent, sustainable design, using good engineering available to anyone.
The duplex unit is designed so that the top floor can be rented out independently of the ground floor, giving the Owner flexibility to rent out one or two floors. This top floor is now rented out. The energy used by the building has been minimal. Super insulation, high ceilings, natural ventilation, fans, and a heated concrete floor have kept the building comfortable.
